How a 2.4m ceiling divides up

A standard 2.4m ceiling gives roughly 2.2m of usable internal height once the carcass and the floor are allowed for. That is the budget everything else comes out of, and it divides more predictably than people expect.

A single long hanging bay — coats, dresses, suit bags — wants about 1,400mm. Double hanging, shirts above and trousers below, wants two bays of about 1,000mm. Drawers run 150 to 250mm each depending on what goes in them, and a top shelf for luggage and out-of-season bedding takes the last 350 to 400mm under the ceiling.

Lay those out and the trade-off becomes obvious: one long hang and a top shelf fills a 2.2m run on its own, so drawers mean giving up either the long hang or the shelf. That is a decision far better made on paper than discovered when the unit is in. The rest of the measurements are on our dimensions guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we offer free, no-obligation site surveys and detailed quotes for all carpentry and property maintenance projects in Penarth.
Absolutely. We carry comprehensive public liability insurance, and all our tradespeople are fully qualified and vetted for your peace of mind.
Our lead times typically range from 3 to 6 weeks. We recommend booking early, especially for bespoke furniture and larger renovations.
About 1,400mm for a long hang that takes coats and dresses, or two bays of about 1,000mm for double hanging shirts over trousers. Most rooms end up with some of each rather than all of one.
If the ceiling allows it. The last 350 to 400mm under a 2.4m ceiling is dead space otherwise, and it is the right size for luggage and out-of-season bedding. It does have to be built in from the start, not added later.
It is measured at the lowest usable point rather than the highest, and the layout is planned around that. Sloping ceilings usually suit drawers and shelving at the low end with the hanging bay under the full height.
