How deep does a fitted wardrobe need to be?

A coat hanger is about 450mm across. Allow for the garment on it and you need roughly 550mm of clear internal depth for clothes to hang square to the rail, which means a carcass of about 600mm once the back and the doors are accounted for. Below that, everything hangs at an angle and the doors catch on shoulders.

Not every room has 600mm to give. Where it does not — a box room, a chimney recess, a landing — the answer is not a shallower rail but a different one: a side-facing pull-out rail works at 350 to 400mm, because the garments hang along the wardrobe rather than across it. You lose the wide view of everything at once and keep a wardrobe that actually works.

It is worth knowing before anyone draws anything, because depth decides whether a room can take a wardrobe on that wall at all. The full set of measurements we build to is on our fitted wardrobe dimensions guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we offer free, no-obligation site surveys and detailed quotes for all carpentry and property maintenance projects in Caerphilly.
Absolutely. We carry comprehensive public liability insurance, and all our tradespeople are fully qualified and vetted for your peace of mind.
Our lead times typically range from 3 to 6 weeks. We recommend booking early, especially for bespoke furniture and larger renovations.
About 550mm of clear internal depth for clothes to hang across the rail, which is roughly a 600mm carcass. Under that, use a side-facing pull-out rail instead — it works down to 350 to 400mm.
Usually, but not a conventional one. A shallow run with a pull-out side-facing rail, or a section of shelving and drawers with a short hanging bay, gets far more out of a small room than forcing a standard-depth carcass into it.
Yes. Sliding doors run in a track in front of the carcass and take about 100mm of the internal depth with them, so a sliding wardrobe has to be built deeper to end up with the same space inside.
