Under-stairs storage is really a question of geometry. The rise and going of the staircase — the height and depth of each step — set the angle of the slope, and that angle decides where the space stops being usable at each point along the run. Two staircases of the same overall length can leave very different voids underneath.
That is why a design cannot be transferred from one house to another, and why an under-stairs unit is measured at several points rather than at one. The tall end usually takes full-height storage, the middle takes drawers or a pull-out, and the shallow end takes whatever is low enough to slide in. An under-stairs cupboard is the darkest storage in the house. It has no window, the doorway is usually the only light, and a person standing in it blocks most of that — which is how the back of a deep cupboard becomes a place things go and do not come out of.
A light on a door switch fixes it for very little, and it is far easier while the unit is being built than afterwards, because the cable route and the switch position can be built into the carcass rather than surface-run later. Where the storage is in pull-out sections, a single fitting at the top usually covers the whole run, since the contents come out to the light instead of you going in after them.
It is worth deciding at the same time whether the space needs a socket. A vacuum on charge, a router or a freezer all change what the cupboard is, and all of them want the supply designed in rather than a lead run under the door.
