Not everything belongs in there. The under-stairs void is often where the consumer unit, the gas or electricity meter or the stop tap lives, and all of those have to stay reachable — designing them behind a fixed panel is the mistake that gets discovered at the worst possible moment.
Airflow is the other consideration. A sealed cupboard with no ventilation is not the place for anything damp, and it is not the place for equipment that gives off heat. Where a unit has to enclose something like that, it gets a removable or hinged panel and a way for air to move, rather than being closed in and forgotten.
Halls are the narrowest rooms in most houses, and an under-stairs unit is usually opposite a wall, a radiator or the front door. A conventional hinged door that needs to swing most of the way open to reach what is behind it can be genuinely awkward in a hall that is only a metre or so wide.
There are three usual answers. Narrower doors, so each one sweeps less; sliding or bi-fold fronts, which take nothing from the hall at all; or pull-outs, where the storage comes to you and the door only has to clear itself. Which one suits depends on the hall rather than the cupboard, so it is measured across the hall, not just across the opening.
Worth checking the swing against the front door too. A cupboard door and a front door that foul each other is a small thing that turns into a daily irritation.
