A good under-stairs unit is one you stop noticing. The hall is usually the first thing anyone sees of a house, so a run of storage that announces itself with a different white, a different handle or a door line that does not follow the stairs pulls the eye straight to it.
Matching the existing doors and their ironmongery, carrying the skirting across the base, and setting the door lines to follow the stair angle rather than fight it are what make it read as part of the house. Finish matters more here than in a bedroom, because hall joinery gets seen from several angles and in changing light all day.
The junction at the bottom is what people notice first and plan last. If the hall has a floor covering that runs under the stairs, the unit either sits on it, sits beside it, or has it cut around — and the three look very different once everything is finished.
Sitting the carcass on the finished floor is simplest and means the unit can be removed later without damage. Bringing the floor up to it gives a cleaner line but ties the two together. Where the existing skirting runs along the wall behind, it normally comes off and returns across the face of the unit so the line is unbroken.
None of that is difficult, but all of it is easier decided in advance. Retro-fitting a skirting return or lifting a floor covering after a unit is fixed is a much bigger job than cutting it right the first time.
