Why alcoves in a Cardiff terrace are never square

Measure the alcoves either side of a chimney breast in a Victorian or Edwardian house and the two sides will not match. A taper of 10 to 40mm top to bottom, or front to back, is completely normal — a century of settlement, replastering and the original build all add up.

That is the whole reason a flat-pack unit never looks right in one. It is built square, so it either sits proud of the wall on one side or leaves a wedge-shaped gap you can see from the doorway. Scribing is the fix: the carcass is built square for strength, and a scribe fillet is cut to follow the actual wall line and close the gap. It is the difference between furniture standing in an alcove and joinery that looks built into it.

It also means the alcoves either side of the same fireplace usually need two different sets of measurements, even though they look like a matching pair. Anyone quoting from one measurement and a photo is guessing at the other side. More on how we build them on our alcove storage page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we offer free, no-obligation site surveys and detailed quotes for all carpentry and property maintenance projects in Cardiff.
Absolutely. We carry comprehensive public liability insurance, and all our tradespeople are fully qualified and vetted for your peace of mind.
Our lead times typically range from 3 to 6 weeks. We recommend booking early, especially for bespoke furniture and larger renovations.
Because the alcove is not square. A taper of 10 to 40mm is normal in an older terrace, and a square carcass in a tapered opening either fouls the wall or leaves a visible wedge. Built-in joinery is scribed to the wall line instead.
Yes. The two sides of the same chimney breast are rarely the same width or depth, so they are measured and built as two different units even though they finish looking like a pair.
Usually. Running the existing skirting profile across the base and returning the cornice above is what makes the unit read as part of the room rather than furniture pushed against a wall.
