The definitive shaker style with added modern depth. Deep lines and wide stiles create a bold, sophisticated look that completely revitalizes old carcasses.
The fire is the one decision a media wall cannot be built around afterwards. Its width sets the proportions of everything above and below it, and its instructions set the clearances — how much space has to be left around the unit, what can sit directly above it, and what the surrounding material has to be. Those figures come from the specific fire, not from a general rule, which is why it is chosen before the wall is designed rather than after.
It also decides how the wall is framed and where the power goes, since an inset fire needs a properly sized aperture and a supply in the right place. Our electric fires page shows the range we fit, and the media walls page covers how they are built in.
A media wall is a piece of architecture rather than a piece of furniture, and the thing that decides whether it looks right is proportion rather than size. A full-width, full-height wall works in a room with the depth to stand back from it; in a small sitting room the same design closes the space in and leaves nowhere for the eye to rest.
The depth matters as much as the face. Building out from the existing wall takes floor area from the room — not much, but enough to matter where the sofa is already close. That is worth marking on the floor and living with for a day before committing, because a drawing does not communicate it.
Where a chimney breast already exists, the usual choice is whether to build around it, flush with it, or across the whole wall to lose it entirely. All three are legitimate; they just have very different consequences for the room, and for how much of it the finished wall gives back.
