The most common regret with a media wall is a television mounted too high. It happens because the wall is designed around the fire and the TV goes above it at whatever height is left, rather than at the height it is comfortable to watch from the sofa.
The rule of thumb is that the middle of the screen wants to sit near eye level when you are sitting down, which is lower than it looks on a drawing. Where a fire underneath pushes the screen up, the answer is usually a slimmer or lower-set fire, or accepting a smaller screen — both better than a wall that gives everyone in the room a stiff neck. It is worth sitting on the actual sofa and measuring before anything is fixed.
Once the screen and the fire are placed, what is left is the surface around them, and that is what the room actually sees when nothing is switched on. Flat painted MDF, slatted timber, fluted panelling and a plain plastered finish all sit on the same carcass and give completely different results.
Two practical points steer the choice. The first is colour: a dark finish makes the screen disappear into the wall when it is off, which most people prefer, while a light finish makes the whole wall a feature and the black rectangle more obvious. The second is texture near heat and dust — slatted and fluted surfaces catch both, and are worth keeping away from the immediate area around a fire.
It is also the decision most easily changed later, which is worth knowing. The carcass, the apertures and the cable routes are effectively permanent; the finish on the face of it is not.
