Most fitted wardrobes are designed around the wall and then filled in afterwards, which is how people end up with a beautiful run of doors and nowhere to put a jumper. The better order is to count what you own first — how many long items, how many folded, how many pairs of shoes — and let that decide the split between hanging, shelving and drawers.
It matters because the three are not interchangeable. Hanging needs height and depth, drawers need width and a run of clear front, shelving needs neither but hides things behind each other. A wardrobe that is 80% hanging in a house where most clothes are folded looks generous and works badly. Our fitted wardrobes page covers the configurations.
